The first thing Percy noticed about this Silo, Jeremiah’s home, was the sensors.

“Ugh! Your sensors are disgusting! We should have asked for some polishers. Do they even work anymore?”

“Somewhat,” Jeremiah answered, and not with the least bit of embarrassment. “Hopefully they’ll see us out here and let us back in.”

“Hopefully? Aren’t they expecting you?” Brandon asked, trying to keep his anxiety from creeping back into his voice.

“Well… we didn’t know there was anyone out there who could help us. It was sort of a last ditch effort.”

“You voluntarily went on what might have been a suicide run?” Carol asked in disbelief.

“You say volunteer, I say short straw… But I guess getting to see the outside was worth it, instead of risking death inside here.”

“So they didn’t know if you’d be back, or if you would even have a living person who could let us in?!” Brandon all but yelled, the pace of his breath steadily increasing.

Jeremiah managed to shrug in his suit, and made his way to the door. And, much like his arrival to Silo 7, he started waving his arms wildly in front of the sensor with the least amount of grime.

Percy let out an audible sigh over the radio. “Why do I feel like us installing that buzzer outside our Silo door is more curse than gift?”

They moved to join their guide and waved frantically for assistance. Brandon tried to calculate how long they could spend here before they would need to turn and go home for more air. When figuring out the travel distance, Jeremiah never gave more than ‘not far’ for an answer, which he followed up with ‘just over that hill, then another hill.’ So they got two canisters, each with several hours of air.

Brandon checked his gauge. The first was almost empty.

But before he could speak his concerns, the Silo door let out a massive groan, and slowly slid open.

“See? They’re home. I knew someone would eventually see us,” Jeremiah said in a very matter-of-fact tone.

No one commented. Brandon was just glad to be getting back into a Silo.
